WHAT ARE YOUR
POST-16 OPTIONS?
Spend time researching online or reading prospectuses, to find out about the Colleges and Sixth Forms in your local area. Also talk to your family, friends and Careers Adviser about the different options.
MAKE SURE YOU
RESEARCH YOUR
CAREER IDEAS!
You might like the sound of a certain career but you need to make sure you really know what’s involved – did you know Social Workers have to write lots of reports, and Engineers have to be good at maths! A good starting point is to look at the different job profiles on the National Careers Service website www.nationalcareersservice.co.uk or to watch videos of people talking about their jobs www.icould.com.

APPRENTICESHIPS YOU WILL HAVE
TO APPLY BY CHRISTMAS
Register on the website Start Profile www.startprofile.com and build-up a personal profile by selecting your interests, skills, qualities and work preferences. Start profile can then suggest jobs that might interest you. Some schools can give you access codes to similar software programmes such as Kudos or JED (Job Explorer Database)
CAREERS GUIDANCE
INTERVIEW
If your school works with Birmingham Careers Service you might be able to request aninterview with a professionally qualified Careers Adviser. Ask your careers coordinator/form tutorabout how you can book an interview. The Careers Adviser will be able to offer youimpartial advice and guidance about your post-16 options, career ideas and career pathways.
WORK
EXPERIENCE
Some schools offer a work experience placement in Year 10. This will give you an insight into the world of work and connect you with local employers. It will improve your confidence and develop your employability skills. It will also help you explore your career ideas. If your school does not offer work experience, you can arrange your own during the school holidays, by sending a CV and Covering Letter to local employers, but always check they have insurance and a work experience policy in place.
GET SET GO FOR
YEAR 11
Year 11 will be packed with homework, coursework, assessments, deadlines and exams.Take the time at the end of Year 10 to organise your GCSE work so far, create new folders and organise your notes. Think about exactly whereyou are in each subject, what you need to work on, and how you’re going to go about it.
