How to get your National Insurance Number

What is a National Insurance number?

Everyone needs a National Insurance Number to prove that they are eligible to work. Your National Insurance Number is sent directly to you just before your 16th birthday. If you do not have a National Insurance Number you are not entitled to work – employers should not offer you employment and you would not be covered by insurance if an accident were to happen.

If you have not received your National Insurance number or need a replacement because yours has been lost or damaged, you can: -

Phone

Telephone the National Insurance number helpline and request your National Insurance number.

There’s also a Textphone service available on 0300 200 3519, and a chat service available.
