V Levels are a brand‑new type of qualification coming in 2027, designed to give you more options after your GCSEs.
Why are V Levels being introduced?
There are many different post-16 qualifications available at the moment, which can make choosing the right option feel overwhelming. The introduction of V Levels is to simplify the system and offer greater flexibility. These are part of a plan to create a clearer, more streamlined approach where academic, technical, and vocational skills are all equally valued.
What is a V Level?
V Levels are Level 3 qualifications focused on vocational learning
They are designed for students who want to explore different career areas before choosing a specialism
V Levels will replace many existing non A Level and non-T Level qualifications
Each V Level is the same size as one A Level. This means you will be able to combine V Levels with A Levels, creating a programme that reflects your interests and career ambitions.
What subjects will be available first?
The first V Level subjects will launch in September 2027 in Digital, Education and Early Years, and Finance and Accounting, with more subjects introduced over time.
Who are V Levels for?
V Levels are a good option for you, if you:
→ Want a practical qualification that is recognised like an A Level
→ Enjoy learning through real work-based tasks
→ Want to explore a job sector before committing to a specific career path
→ Prefer a mix of academic and skills‑based learning
How can a V Level help me?
Studying V Levels can help you:
→ Build skills that employers look for
→ Keep your options open for university, apprenticeships, or employment
→ Gain confidence through hands-on industry-linked learning
