WHAT IS A CAREERS GUIDANCE MEETING?

How can my Careers Adviser help me?

What is a careers guidance meeting?

This is an impartial one to one meeting between yourself and a Careers Adviser.  It is not like going for a job interview, so you can’t get anything wrong!  It is all about YOU and your FUTURE.  The aim of the careers guidance meeting is to help you think about your future career choices based on your interests, skills and qualifications.  It will help you make decisions about what pathway to take after school.  Do you need to go to college, gain an Apprenticeship or go to university?  It will give you information about your chosen careers and where you can find out more.

Questions

The Careers Adviser will ask you lots of questions, so that they can get a clear picture of the best way they can help you. They may question your answers, challenge your ideas to help you improve your career planning skills. The Careers Adviser can help you whatever stage you are at with your planning, so no need to worry if you don’t know what you want to do.

How long will it last?

The meeting will last for up to 45 minutes. It will take place in a quiet, confidential space – so you won’t get interrupted. The Careers Adviser will make notes and afterwards write you an Action Plan summarising your next steps.
